Tasting Flight - Week of 7/14/25

Jul 16, 2025

Hello friends!

This week we’re tasting through four wines from across southern Italy – two unique and textural wines from Sicily, followed by a red wine and sparkling rosé from Puglia!

First in the flight is Grottafumata’s “Lato Sud”, which is about 70% Carricante and 30% Catarratto along with very low percentages of various local varieties (including Minnella, Grecanico, Terribile, Inzolia, and Coda di Volpe). Grottafumata is on the west side of Mount Etna, terroir which brings a signature smoky, volcanic minerality. Additional complexity and texture come from a short period of skin contact, as well as time spent in terracotta amphorae.

Next up is Porta del Vento’s “Anfora” Bianco, a blend of various local white grape varieties from high-elevation, windswept vineyards southwest of Palermo. This orange wine sees an even longer period of maceration on the skins, as well as extended time in amphora (hence the name of the cuvée!).

We end the flight with two wines from L’Archetipo, a producer based in the province of Taranto in Puglia, the region that forms the heel of Italy’s boot. L’Archetipo farms organically and has also adopted biodynamic practices, but has gone even further by defining their own “synergistic” approach to viticulture. We’re tasting their “Niuru Maru,” a still red wine of Negroamaro, and their “Susamante,” a bright and expressive sparkling rosato of Susumaniello.

It’s $25 to taste through the flight of four wines. We hope you’ll join us!
