Bical and Maria Gomes
Bairrada, Portugal
Despite a challenging 2018 growing season with high rainfall followed by scorching summer heat, meticulous vineyard management and the region's water reserves ensured good quality grapes. This unforgiving weather highlighted the importance of preventative measures in the vineyard. The wine itself, produced from old vine Bairrada vineyards with limestone-rich soils, boasts a classic Burgundian character. Following fermentation in stainless steel tanks and large oak fuders, the VV 2018 underwent malolactic fermentation and a 20-month maturation period before being bottled unfiltered. Visually, the wine displays a brilliant lemon color. On the nose, it is discreet yet captivating, offering citrus and apricot notes alongside hints of nuts, florals, and fresh herbs. The palate is where this wine truly shines, showcasing impressive structure, elegance, and a vibrant acidity complemented by a saline minerality that speaks to the Bairrada's limestone terroir. The finish is long and lingering, concluding with subtle spicy notes.
