Maremma, Tuscany Italy
Working with predominantly older vines and grape varietals native to the Maremma, a coastal region of Tuscany, Antonio Camillo is first-and-foremost a farmer, then an old school producer eschewing modern trends, making low-intervention wines expressive of the terroir of the region, with a grace and delicacy that are proof of craft. This orange wine from 70 year-old Procanico (aka Trebbiano) vines gets 20 days of skin contact before resting in concrete. Wild floral aromatics on the nose lead to a fuller-bodied palate of stone fruit, citrus, and herbs, as you’d expect from Trebbiano, with texture and grip and a wild and fresh cidery character you want from an orange wine.
Antonio Camillo bought two vineyards totalling 5 hectares in the area between Sovana and Pitigliano on the border with Lazio. He is now up to 9 hectares and the vineyards are situated in various locations, for different soil and climate. They are only planted with varieties traditionally found in the Maremma: Vermentino, Trebbiano, Ansonica, Malvasia, Sangiovese, Ciliegiolo and Alicante. The wines are vegan.
